The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the federal government for allegedly inflating food prices through deliberate hoarding of imported supplies while undermining local production, describing the policy as a calculated "weaponisation of hunger" for political advantage.
In a statement issued Monday and signed by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party rejected official claims of declining food costs and increased domestic output, insisting that millions of Nigerians continue to face acute hardship.
The ADC highlighted the plight of farmers, particularly in northern Nigeria, where widespread banditry has displaced agricultural communities and driven up input costs beyond reach.
"Many farmers, especially in the northern part of the country, have been displaced by banditry, while those that remained active could not afford the skyrocketing cost of fertilisers and other critical inputs," the statement read.
It accused the Tinubu administration of stockpiling imported food items while allowing domestic scarcity to persist, thereby creating artificial inflation that benefits political narratives rather than citizens.
"The party questioned the rationale behind hoarding imported food while millions go hungry, calling it a deliberate weaponisation of poverty for political gains," Abdullahi wrote.
The ADC demanded an immediate overhaul of Nigeria’s agricultural framework, advocating for robust policies to safeguard local farmers, ensure price stability, protect rural lives, and advance long-term food sovereignty.
The party’s criticism comes amid persistent food inflation, with staple prices remaining elevated despite government interventions such as duty waivers on imports and distribution of grains from strategic reserves.
