2027: Governors' Defections to APC Won’t Save Tinubu - Dino Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye, a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has dismissed the impact of opposition governors defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election, stating it will neither strengthen the party nor benefit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Melaye argued that the 2023 presidential election exposed the declining influence of governors in shaping electoral outcomes. He pointed to the success of Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who won 11 states including the FCT, and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, who secured 12 states—eight under APC control—despite lacking the backing of many governors.

“The 2023 election marked a turning point, shattering the myth that governors control voter loyalty,” Melaye said.

He highlighted APC’s struggles in states like Delta, where the PDP vice-presidential candidate lost to Obi, and Lagos, Tinubu’s stronghold, which fell to Labour Party.

Melaye attributed these outcomes to a growing voter awareness that transcends traditional political structures.

“Nigerians voted their conscience in 2023 despite economic pressures not being as severe as today. By 2027, with rising hardship, hunger, and unemployment, the electorate will deliver a stronger verdict,” he predicted.

He criticized both APC and PDP as corrupt and internally fractured, teetering on the brink of collapse. In contrast, Melaye positioned the ADC as a fresh, untainted alternative.

“The ADC offers a people-driven reset, free from the corruption and elitism of the old guard,” he said.Melaye concluded that 2027 will be a “citizens’ election,” not dictated by governors, but a referendum on the establishment.

“The people have found their voice, and no defection can silence it,” he declared.
