No fewer than 170 individuals from diverse countries have formally applied for Nigerian citizenship, Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed on Wednesday during the inaugural meeting of the Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship (ACNC) in Abuja.
The minister described citizenship as “a privilege, not a right,” insisting it must be earned through demonstrated integrity, good character, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s values.“Citizenship is sacred.
It is not for sale, and it cannot be acquired through shortcuts or illegal means,” Tunji-Ojo warned, directing the committee to conduct exhaustive background checks on every applicant.
“Only those of impeccable integrity will be considered.”He linked the citizenship process to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that granting nationality must align with national security, economic prosperity, and the overall well-being of Nigerians.
“Nigeria remains the greatest asset to its citizens,” the minister declared. “We will protect that asset by ensuring only individuals who will add value and never compromise our sovereignty are welcomed into the fold.”
The ACNC, comprising security experts, legal luminaries, and immigration officials, has been mandated to review applications with transparency and rigor.
Sources indicate applicants hail from Europe, Asia, North America, and other African nations, with motivations ranging from long-term residency and business ties to cultural affinity.
The announcement comes amid ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s immigration framework aimed at attracting high-value foreign talent while safeguarding national identity.
The ministry assured that approved applicants would undergo naturalization ceremonies symbolizing their full integration into Nigerian society.
