Viral Video: Nigerian Student in Tears as UK Revokes Visa for Exceeding 20-Hour Work Limit

A heartbreaking video of a Nigerian student in the UK has left many in shock after she revealed that her three-year academic journey has ended abruptly because she exceeded her work hours as an international student.

The young lady, who travelled to the UK in 2022 for her BSc, broke down in tears as she narrated how her life took a painful turn.

According to her, she lost her father in 2023, an incident that plunged her into deep depression. She blamed herself for his death and revealed how hard it was not being able to attend his burial, watching everything instead over a video call.

Despite her struggles, she resolved to push through and graduate with a first class to make her late father proud. To cope with depression, she often surrounded herself with people. Her “happy place” became her workplace, and in the process, she mistakenly exceeded the number of hours international students are allowed to work.

She explained that when the UK Home Office questioned her employer, she admitted the mistake and believed everything was settled. But earlier this year, she was contacted again, answered honestly, and thought it was resolved. Sadly, she was later informed that she had violated her visa rules and must leave the country with immediate effect.

Her university, which had sponsored her education, also withdrew its support.

What makes her story even more painful is that she is just weeks away from graduating—and currently on track for a first class degree. She begged the school to allow her to complete her programme online from Nigeria, but her request was reportedly declined.

Under current immigration regulations, international students are only allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time, with full-time work permitted only during official breaks. Breaching this rule can result in visa cancellation, fines, or deportation.
