Vehicle Accident Uncovers 112kg Cannabis in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, has confiscated 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa, totaling 112 kilograms, following a road traffic accident on the Zaria-Kano Road near Gadar Tamburawa.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, September 11, 2025, by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASN Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, a search of the involved vehicle revealed the hidden cannabis consignment.

The driver admitted to acting on behalf of the consignor and disclosed that he had made similar deliveries within and beyond Kano. He further confessed to using a one-way route to avoid NDLEA checkpoints.

“Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano recovered 150 blocks and 3 sacks of loose cannabis sativa weighing a total of 112 kg after responding to a road traffic accident on the Zaria–Kano Road near Gadar Tamburawa in the early hours of Saturday, 6 September 2025,” the statement read.

"At about 0600 hrs, NDLEA patrol officers heard a loud noise indicating a collision involving a Volkswagen Golf and a truck. Officers immediately rushed to the scene to render first aid and effect rescues. They removed the windscreen and a window of the Golf to extricate the driver and forced open the other door to remove the passenger. The one on the passenger side attempted to flee immediately after opening the door, but was apprehended by officers.

"A search of the Golf revealed 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis sativa, with a combined weight of 112 kg. The person on the driver’s side told operatives he was acting as a representative of the consignor and had made similar deliveries both within and outside Kano in the past. The driver also told investigators that he used a one-way route in an attempt to evade checkpoints mounted by the NDLEA while entering Kano.

"An investigation into the case is ongoing. The driver of the Golf is receiving medical treatment while responding to inquiries; initial reports indicate the driver of the truck sustained a fracture.

"This incident involved two offenses: one-way driving leading to a collision and trafficking in narcotics.

"The NDLEA in Kano, under the leadership of ACGN AI Ahmad, reiterates its commitment to vigorously pursue and prosecute those involved in drug trafficking.

"Members of the public are urged to refrain from involvement in such criminal activities and to report suspicious movements of illicit drugs to NDLEA authorities.

"The Command commends the prompt, professional and courageous conduct of the patrol officers involved in the rescue, apprehension and recovery operation. We likewise give full credit to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Brig Gen Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR, for his leadership, strategic guidance and sustained efforts to strengthen operational readiness and professionalism within the Service.

“The effectiveness displayed by the personnel on duty is a direct reflection of the training, resources and organisational standards promoted under his leadership.”
