U.S. Embassy Silently Revokes Nigerians’ Visas, Stranding Travellers Without Explanation

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has been quietly revoking valid visas issued to Nigerian citizens, disrupting the plans of professionals, entrepreneurs, and families, according to an article by Olufemi Soneye, former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.

The article published on August 31, 2025, titled “The Quiet Revocation: Why is the U.S. Silently Cancelling Nigerians’ Visas?”Soneye revealed that affected Nigerians, including a prominent journalist, a federal agency head, and an Abuja-based entrepreneur with a clean travel record, received letters in recent weeks instructing them to submit their passports at the U.S. Consulate in Lagos or Abuja, where their visas were cancelled without explanation.

The notices, citing Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 41.122, vaguely referenced “new information” but offered no specifics, evidence, or appeal options.

The revocations have left travellers stranded, with some discovering cancellations only at airports, leading to detentions and forced returns.

Others cancelled critical trips for education, medical treatment, or business, incurring significant costs.

Affected individuals, who claim no history of immigration violations, are frustrated by the lack of transparency.

Neither the U.S. Embassy nor Nigerian authorities have publicly addressed the issue, fueling fears of a targeted tightening of U.S. visa policy toward Nigerians.

Analysts suggest this may reflect heightened scrutiny of high-migration countries, a practice noted in past U.S. policy documents, leaving citizens in limbo and raising questions about fairness and diplomatic relations.
