Tinubu Vows State Police Creation, Deploys Drones to Combat Katsina Banditry Surge

President Bola Tinubu has declared the establishment of state police as an unavoidable step to address Nigeria’s escalating security challenges, emphasizing a robust federal commitment to combating banditry and insecurity nationwide.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, during a courtesy visit by prominent Katsina indigenes led by Governor Dikko Radda at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu outlined bold measures to bolster security in Katsina and beyond.

The president directed security agencies to reassess their strategies in Katsina, a state grappling with a surge in banditry, and announced the deployment of advanced military equipment, including drones and surveillance technology.

Additionally, he revealed plans to enhance the training and capacity of newly recruited forest guards to strengthen local security efforts.“Our security challenges are surmountable,” Tinubu asserted.

“We inherited weaknesses, like porous borders, that could have been addressed earlier. But we are facing these challenges head-on. I have directed security agencies to energize and review strategies, and we have approved the acquisition of more drones. I am reviewing all aspects of security, including the creation of state police, which we are looking at holistically. We will defeat insecurity and protect our people, their livelihoods, and our communities.”

Tinubu highlighted ongoing efforts to establish state police, referencing a February 2024 federal committee tasked with developing a framework for the initiative.

Despite widespread support, Vice-President Kashim Shettima noted in March that 20 states are yet to submit their reports, signaling delays in implementation. The president also paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away, assuring the delegation that his legacy would be preserved.

“The loss of our brother, President Buhari, is a loss for all of us,” Tinubu said. “But he left a legacy of success, not a defeated country, and that is what matters most.”

Governor Radda commended Tinubu’s consistent support, noting his responsiveness to Katsina’s needs.

Former Governor Aminu Masari and Ibrahim Ida, the Wazirin of Katsina, also praised Tinubu for honoring Buhari and investing in infrastructure.

However, Ida urged the federal government to prioritize upgrading Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport and intensifying security efforts in southern Katsina, where banditry remains a pressing concern.
