President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to speak before world leaders at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
The 80th session of the UNGA opened on September 9, with the
high-level general debate billed to commence on the 23rd.
This year’s session is themed ‘Better Together: 80 Years And
More For Peace, Development And Human Rights’.
Tinubu is expected to join the gathering of 195 world
leaders made up of 98 heads of state, five vice-presidents, 44 heads of
government, and four deputy prime ministers.
Others are 37 ministers, one crown prince, and four chairs
of delegation.
According to NAN, a revised provisional list of speakers
obtained at the UNGA headquarters in New York showed that Tinubu would deliver
his address during the afternoon session on September 24.
He would be the 17th world leader to speak on Day 2 of the
general debate, but his slot could change if he does not attend in person.
At the UNGA debate, world leaders would make statements
outlining their positions and priorities in the context of complex and
interconnected global challenges.
A high-level meeting will be held to mark the UN’s 80th
anniversary. The one-hour session will see UN officials and world leaders
reflecting on eight decades of achievements and charting the way towards a more
inclusive and responsive multilateral system.
On September 22, France and Saudi Arabia will co-chair a
high-level conference on Palestine and the implementation of the two-state
solution.
On September 25, heads of state and government will meet to
shape a new vision for preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases
(NCDs) — such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic
respiratory conditions — while advancing mental health and wellbeing.
The discussions will centre on adopting a bold yet
achievable political declaration that looks ahead to 2030 and beyond.
On September 26, a high-level meeting will be held to mark
and advance the ‘International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear
Weapons’.
Tinubu is currently on a 10-day vacation in France and the
UK. The Nigerian leader left Abuja on September 4.
On September 10, Tinubu had a “productive lunch” with French
President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris, where “key areas of
cooperation between Nigeria and France” were reviewed.
