Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has accused President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately undermining the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party to transform Nigeria into a one-party state.
Tambuwal made the allegations during an interview on Channels TV, where he lamented the internal crises plaguing the opposition parties as orchestrated efforts by the APC to consolidate power.
Speaking passionately about the PDP's ongoing turmoil, Tambuwal claimed that the APC's interference has exacerbated divisions within the party, rendering it ineffective as a viable opposition.
He pointed to recent defections, leadership wrangles, and funding disputes as evidence of external sabotage.
"Tinubu and the APC are behind the crisis in our party," Tambuwal stated, echoing sentiments from his appearance on the popular news program.
He further alleged that similar tactics are being employed against the Labour Party, which emerged as a strong contender in the 2023 general elections, to weaken its growing influence and prevent it from challenging the ruling party's dominance.
Tambuwal, who served as Sokoto State Governor and remains a prominent PDP figure, traced the roots of the PDP's challenges to internal betrayals and ethnic politics during the 2018 and 2022 presidential primaries.
He criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for abandoning the party multiple times, including after the 2014 limbo following President Goodluck Jonathan's refusal to hand over the ticket post-Yar'Adua.
Tambuwal highlighted how Nyesom Wike, then Rivers State Governor, had shouldered the party's survival, only to be sidelined in 2022 when Tambuwal himself stepped down for Atiku at the primary— a move he now reflects on as influenced by the "Northern card."
The former Speaker also addressed Wike's subsequent alliance with Tinubu, noting his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory as a reward for working against the PDP in 2023.
"Wike has been one of the best appointees," Tambuwal acknowledged, but added that Wike's loyalist as PDP national secretary ensures his grip on the party's structure.
Despite this, Tambuwal vowed resilience, boasting of his determination to halt Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027. "My mission is to stop Tinubu in 2027," he declared, dismissing critics who blame his past actions for the PDP's woes.
The interview has ignited debates within political circles, with some APC chieftains dismissing Tambuwal's claims as scapegoating for the opposition's self-inflicted wounds.
