Tinubu: 78% of N330bn Social Protection Funds Benefits Northern Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu revealed that 78% of the beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s N330 billion social protection programme are from northern Nigeria, underscoring the region's critical role in the nation's economic future.

Speaking through the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, at the Northern Nigeria Investment and Industrialisation Summit (NNIIS) 2025 in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the programme’s impact, with 8.1 million households nationwide receiving direct benefit transfers, including 2.4 million households that have received two tranches.

“The process is verifiable as each beneficiary is uniquely identified,” he assured.Tinubu emphasized the North’s potential to drive Nigeria’s economic transformation, citing its vast arable land, mineral resources, and energy potential as key to ensuring food security, boosting exports, and accelerating industrialization.

“The North holds the key to the country’s economic future,” he stated, urging stakeholders to harness these resources for sustainable growth.

At the same summit, themed Unlocking Strategic Opportunities in Mining, Agriculture, and Power, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule called on his counterparts to take full responsibility for security in their states, arguing that unprecedented federal allocations leave no room for excuses.

He noted that monthly disbursements to the three tiers of government have quadrupled under Tinubu’s administration, with over N2.2 trillion shared in August 2025 alone, compared to N590–N620 billion when he assumed office in 2019.

“For the first time in our history, all tiers of government are sharing more revenue than they ever imagined,” Sule said, urging governors to channel these funds into transformative sectors like agriculture, mining, and power while prioritizing security to attract investment.

The NNIIS 2025, hosted by NEF, brought together stakeholders to explore pathways for industrial growth, leveraging the North’s natural endowments.

The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) had earlier reported disbursing N2.22 trillion in August from a gross total of N3.63 trillion, reflecting the financial windfall Sule referenced.
