Prominent Nigerian sports journalist and football analyst Edafe Matthew has sparked controversy with a scathing attack on the current Super Eagles squad, branding them "the worst set of human beings" to ever represent Nigeria on the football field.
The remarks, made during a recent broadcast, reflect growing frustration with the team’s lackluster performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Matthew’s outburst follows Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw against South Africa in a World Cup qualifying match in Bloemfontein, leaving the Super Eagles third in Group C with 11 points from eight games.
The result has led to fears that Nigeria may miss the 2026 World Cup, a prospect that has fueled widespread criticism of the team and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
“This Super Eagles is the worst set of human beings that I have met in a collection in my entire life... these are the worst set of human beings that I've seen play football for Nigeria,” Matthew declared, voicing sentiments.
His comments shows the team’s struggles, with only two wins in their qualifying campaign against opponents like Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Benin, and South Africa.
The Super Eagles’ woes have drawn sharp rebukes from other quarters. Former captain Mikel Obi has called for a complete overhaul of the NFF if the team fails to qualify, while Nigerian legend Segun Odegbami likened the squad to “Guinea Fowls,” a far cry from their once-proud “Super Eagles” moniker.
The NFF has not been spared, facing backlash over its management and a controversial statement—later disowned—attributed to its Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, which criticized striker Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong after the South Africa draw.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi defended Troost-Ekong, calling his own goal “unfortunate” and praising the team’s effort.
Amid the criticism, former NPFL star Abu Azeez offered a rare defense of Dessers, ranking him among Nigeria’s top strikers for his goalscoring instinct, despite recent struggles.
With crucial matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic looming, the Super Eagles and coach Eric Chelle face immense pressure to turn their campaign around.
Matthew’s stinging words have ignited a firestorm, and the team must now prove they can rise above the label of being Nigeria’s most disappointing squad in recent history.
