Peter Obi Urges Swift Federal Intervention as PENGASSAN Strike Cripples Nigeria's Oil Sector

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced deep concerns over the Federal Government's apparent inaction in addressing the nationwide strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

This has led to the shutdown of major facilities, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), with 100% compliance reported at sites like the NMDPRA headquarters in Abuja.

Obi, in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressed alarm at the "lack of response by the Government to the threat and eventual commencement of a strike by PENGASSAN, which is already having a very adverse impact on Nigerian citizens and the Nigerian economy."

He highlighted the immediate ripple effects, warning that the action threatens fuel supply chains, potentially triggering scarcity, power outages, and price hikes that would exacerbate hardships for ordinary Nigerians.

"I strongly appeal to the Federal Government to intervene quickly to resolve this dispute in a manner that protects the interests of the Nigerian people, Nigerian workers, Nigerian Investors and the Economy at large," Obi stated.

"The protection of these interests in a win-win manner is the primary responsibility of any responsible Government."

The former Anambra State governor further admonished the administration to "learn to nip in the bud the labour crisis that has the potential of creating further suffering for the already struggling citizens of our dear country," reiterating the need for proactive dialogue to prevent broader economic sabotage.
