Peter Obi Slams President Tinubu for Frequent Foreign Trips Amid Nigeria’s Crises

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has criticized President Tinubu for embarking on another foreign trip to the UK on September 4, 2025, for his annual leave, just six days after returning from a 15-day trip abroad.

In a statement, Obi expressed concern that Tinubu’s frequent travels suggest he finds Nigeria “not conducive for a long stay.”

Obi highlighted the dire state of the nation, noting that 79% of Nigerians—over 180 million people—face food insecurity.

He pointed to Nigeria’s recent rankings as the worst country for childbirth and the worst place to live, with the lowest life expectancy globally.

Obi also referenced recent tragedies, including the deaths of over 50 people in a Katsina mosque and village attack, over 60 kidnappings, and a boat mishap in Niger State that claimed 60 lives, mostly women and children.

He questioned why Tinubu did not visit affected areas, such as Niger State, a short trip from Abuja, to console grieving families before leaving for his holiday.

“Where is the compassion for Nigerian lives, Mr. President?” Obi asked, emphasizing that no holiday should take precedence over the lives Tinubu swore to protect.

Obi urged the President to show leadership by addressing Nigeria’s challenges, including poverty, healthcare, education, and security, rather than prioritizing foreign trips.

“True leadership is about sacrifice,” he said, calling for a president who remains present and empathetic during times of crisis.
