Peter Obi Slams FG Over Unpaid Pension Arrears Amid Revenue Surplus Claims

Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, has voiced deep concern over reports that Nigeria’s pensioners are planning a nationwide protest due to unpaid pension arrears.

In a statement shared on X on September 17, 2025, Obi criticized the Federal Government’s failure to address the plight of retirees despite claims of meeting revenue targets.

Obi questioned the government’s priorities, noting that President Bola Tinubu announced last month that Nigeria had achieved its revenue goals.

“If that is true, then the moral question is simple: why are our senior citizens, who worked, served, and sacrificed, still owed their rightful pensions and gratuities?” he asked.

He emphasized that revenue growth should first improve the lives of vulnerable citizens, particularly pensioners facing hardship.

He urged the government to direct excess revenue to settle pension obligations, stating, “The excess revenue we celebrate today must not remain on paper. It must be directed to settle our obligations to pensioners, to restore their dignity, and to assure the working population that Nigeria values their labour and service. Anything less is unjust and unacceptable.”

Obi concluded by stressing that “good leadership and compassion are inseparable.”
