Over 750 Nigerian Women Storm NASS to Demand Passage of Special Seats Bill

A coalition of over 750 Nigerian women from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) converged on the National Assembly today to advocate for the passage of the Special Seats Reserved for Women Bill during the National Public Hearing on Constitutional Reforms.

Led by the Women’s Political Participation Technical Working Group (WPP–TWG), the women began their activities at 9:00 a.m. at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development.

By 10:00 a.m., they marched to the National Assembly Complex to submit a memorandum to the Senate, pressing for legislative action to enhance women’s representation in governance.

At noon, a high-level stakeholder and media engagement took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, where women leaders amplified their call for inclusive governance and constitutional reform.

Ebere Ifendu, Chairman of the WPP–TWG, described the march as a powerful show of unity, emphasizing the bill’s significance.

“The Reserved Seats Bill is not merely about numbers; it’s about securing women’s rightful place in governance and ensuring their voices shape decisions that impact their lives,” she stated.

Ifendu also called on journalists and media outlets to provide robust coverage and support as allies in the fight for gender equity.

The women’s coalition remains steadfast in its push for systemic change, aiming to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape through this historic advocacy effort.
