The Osun State Government has unveiled Imole Wi-Fi, a free public internet service aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity for residents, students, businesses, and communities across the state.
The initiative, launched on Monday, September 8, by the Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy Office under the Office of the Special Adviser, marks a significant step in Governor Ademola Adeleke’s push for digital inclusion and economic growth.
Announced by the State Commissioner for Information and Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, Imole Wi-Fi is designed to provide fast and reliable internet access to support education, health, agriculture, commerce, and community development.
The initial phase of the rollout covers key locations in Osogbo, including the Osun State Library, Alphastart Hub, Osun Mall, Salvation Army Middle School, Osogbo Grammar School, and sites within the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy.
Governor Adeleke, speaking at the launch, described Imole Wi-Fi as “a gateway to opportunity,” emphasizing its role in breaking down barriers and driving growth across Osun’s economy.
“With this public digital infrastructure, we are connecting people and stimulating progress in every sector,” he said.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts under Adeleke’s administration, including the unveiling of the Osun State ICT Policy, Tech Innovation Policy, and the Osun Startups Act, all aimed at positioning Osun as a hub for digital innovation in Nigeria.
Special Adviser on Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy, Azeez Badmus, highlighted that this launch is only the first phase, with plans to expand coverage to additional locations.
“As we scale Imole Wi-Fi, more government services and sector-specific digital tools will follow, ensuring every resident benefits from Osun’s digital future,” Badmus stated.
The project builds on the legacy of digital initiatives like the Opon Imo scheme from the previous administration, reimagining access for a broader audience.
Imole Wi-Fi is expected to roll out to more public spaces, with the government calling on private sector partners to support its expansion.
