The Ogun state government, through the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker alerted members of the public on the rise in the number of diphtheria cases across the state.
According to Coker, diphtheria is a bacterial infection that is easily transmitted from one person to another through close contact, sneezing, or coughing.
Coker warned residents not to self-medicate, saying if left untreated, diphtheria can result in serious consequences and even death.
The commissioner listed the symptoms associated the disease to include sore throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, fever, swollen neck, and a thick layer of grey or white coating in the throat or nose.
She stated that the bacteria infection can be prevented by getting vaccinated, practicing the greatest standards of personal hygiene, and staying away from infected individuals among others.
“To protect yourself, your family, and the community, we advise the following: Ensure vaccination: Diphtheria is preventable. Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure that children receive all recommended routine immunizations.
“Adults who missed their vaccines should also get protected. Practice good hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and water, and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
“Avoid close contact with sick persons: If you notice anyone with diphtheria-like symptoms, keep a safe distance and encourage them to seek medical care immediately.
“Seek early treatment: Anyone who develops symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate,” she warned.
The commissioner assured residents that the state government and its developmental partners are making every effort to ensure safety.
