NURTW Chieftain Arraigned in Lagos Court Over Brutal M^rder of Dispatch Rider

Samsideen Oladiti, a 55-year-old prominent chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) popularly known as "Shamelon," was arraigned before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court 2 on Tuesday for the alleged murder of a dispatch rider in Lagos Island.

The arraignment stems from a violent confrontation earlier this month, where Oladiti is accused of launching a savage attack on the unidentified victim using a motorcycle helmet and his fists, inflicting severe injuries that ultimately led to the rider's death.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded amid rising tensions in the bustling commercial hub of Lagos Island, a hotspot for transport-related disputes involving NURTW members who control much of the city's okada (motorcycle taxi) and danfo (minibus) operations.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed in an official statement that Oladiti had been under investigation since his arrest on September 19.

"The 55-year-old suspect allegedly attacked the dispatch rider with a helmet and fists, causing grievous harm," Oluseyi detailed, adding that the assault was captured in a separate complaint lodged against the chieftain on August 28, 2025, though specifics of that prior incident remain under wraps.

Oladiti, who has long been a influential figure in NURTW's Lagos branch, was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.

The union, notorious for its history of turf wars, cult-like affiliations, and involvement in political thuggery, has faced increased scrutiny from authorities amid a crackdown on organized crime in the state.

Sources close to the case suggest the attack may have been triggered by a minor traffic altercation, but police are probing deeper motives, including possible union rivalries.
