NSC Chairman Defends Quality of Nigerian Team’s Kits at 2025 World Championships

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has refuted allegations that the Nigerian team at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, was provided with substandard kits, addressing concerns raised by star athlete Tobi Amusan.

Amusan, a former world champion and women’s 100m hurdles record holder, had publicly criticized the quality of the kits supplied to Nigerian athletes before their departure for the ongoing championhip.

In a video statement, she described the kits as “poor,” sparking widespread discussion on social media.

In an interview with Channels TV on Monday morning, Dikko dismissed the claims, asserting that the kits meet international standards.

“Those kits are not inferior or whatever people are trying to say. If you look at other countries, they are using similar kits. It’s probably just about the packaging—maybe they weren’t put in a box or bought in bulk,” he explained.

Dikko also addressed Amusan’s remarks with respect, acknowledging her status as a national icon.

“I don’t want to go into Tobi; she is our star athlete. I respect her a lot, and we honor her greatly. She made the video, and it is what it is, but that’s not the case,” he said.

Additionally, Dikko responded to allegations that the Nigerian delegation to Tokyo included more government officials than athletes.

He clarified that the team composition was standard, with necessary support staff to ensure athletes’ success, and urged the public to focus on supporting the team’s performance.
