NRC Resumes Port Harcourt–Aba Rail Service After Disruption, Slash Fare

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has restored train operations on the Port Harcourt–Aba route following a technical fault that stranded passengers near the Imo River last week.

To rebuild public trust, the corporation has introduced a temporary fare reduction and free trips for affected passengers, according to a statement by Dr. Onyedikachi Onovo, the Eastern District Public Relations Officer, released on Tuesday.

The disruption occurred when a train traveling from Aba to Port Harcourt suffered a critical mechanical failure mid-journey, forcing passengers to disembark.

Many were left to seek alternative transport, with some trekking long distances and crossing streams to find assistance.

The NRC acknowledged that on-site repair attempts were unsuccessful, necessitating the deployment of an alternative locomotive, Loco 2306, to recover the stalled train and safely return passengers to their destinations. In response to public outcry, the NRC issued an apology for the inconvenience.

“The train has undergone thorough repairs to ensure it is fit to resume service in line with our enhanced quality control,” Onovo stated.

“We deeply value the patience and understanding shown by our passengers during this period.”

To address passenger grievances, the NRC announced a 50% fare reduction for new passengers on the Port Harcourt–Aba route and free trips for those with tickets from the disrupted journey.

The corporation emphasized its commitment to safer, more reliable rail services, with management pledging to transform operations nationwide.
