NRC Concludes Probe into Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment, Cites Human Error, Excessive Speeding

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has completed its internal investigation into the August 26 derailment of an Abuja-Kaduna train at Asham, attributing the incident to human error, specifically excessive speeding and misuse of the emergency braking system.

NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa, in a statement on Monday, said the corporation has accepted the investigation’s recommendations and is awaiting reports from the Ministerial Committee and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau before finalizing decisions.

Opeifa reported significant progress in recovery efforts, with all affected coaches and locomotives re-railed and moved to workshops for detailed assessment and repairs.

The main line has been restored to safe operational levels, though the secondary track remains closed pending further repairs.

A comprehensive safety and infrastructure assessment of the corridor is underway to ensure durability and reliability, with operations set to resume only after inspections, technical tests, and certifications are completed.

“Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to restoring public confidence in rail services,” Opeifa emphasized.

Of the 618 passengers on board, 22 sustained injuries and are recovering, while 512 have been contacted.

Efforts continue to reach the remaining 71 passengers, hindered by incorrect or unresponsive contact details.

Opeifa assured the public that an announcement on service resumption would be made soon.

The NRC expressed gratitude to passengers for their patience, media for timely updates, and security agencies for supporting recovery efforts and ensuring safety.

The corporation remains focused on enhancing rail safety and service reliability across the Abuja-Kaduna corridor.
