The Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to address the deplorable working conditions of National Theatre workers, demanding their immediate return to the newly renovated facility.
In a letter to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammed Dingyadi, NLC Lagos Council Chairman, Funmi Sessi, condemned the “degrading and unacceptable” conditions under which workers have been forced to operate, often working under trees despite the completed renovation of the Theatre by the Bankers’ Committee.
She noted that previous letters to improve conditions went unanswered.Sessi warned that the NLC is ready to mobilize protests and industrial action if demands are not met.
The union calls for a transparent resolution, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and protection of all jobs, as promised by former Minister Lai Mohammed.
She also criticized the new Board Chairman, Disun Holloway, for failing to engage with workers or address their welfare since his appointment three months ago, alleging his tenure is marked by secrecy and disregard for staff, who continue to work in open-air conditions.
The NLC vowed to oppose any covert privatization of the facility and accused the government of violating international and national labour standards, including ILO Convention No. 190.
