The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have agreed to enhance their collaboration, enabling Nigerians to register for both their National Identification Number (NIN) and voter registration at designated centers concurrently.
The partnership was formalized during a visit by NIMC Director-General, Engineer Dr. Abisola Kukar, and her delegation to INEC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, September 4, 2025, where they were received by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, alongside National Commissioners and directors.
According to a statement posted on INEC’s X handle, the collaboration builds on the “institutional memory” between the two agencies, which manage Nigeria’s largest biometric databases.
Yakubu described the partnership as a step toward establishing NIMC’s database as the “single source of truth for citizenship identification,” potentially allowing the national voter register to be derived from it.
He envisioned a future where citizens could vote from any location in Nigeria, rather than being restricted to their registration location.
As an immediate measure, NIMC officials will be deployed to select INEC voter registration centers nationwide, expanding on a successful pilot conducted in Anambra State in July 2022.
This initiative aims to capture citizens yet to enroll for their NIN during the voter registration process, streamlining identification and electoral processes.
