Nigeria’s Largest University Solar Plant Launched at FUTO

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable energy with the unveiling of an 8.54 Megawatts Peak (MWp) Solar Hybrid Power Plant at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), marking it as Nigeria’s largest solar facility in a tertiary institution.

This landmark project, part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to deliver clean, reliable, and cost-effective electricity to critical national institutions.

The solar plant, equipped with advanced battery storage and backup systems, will reduce FUTO’s reliance on diesel generators, lower energy costs, and provide consistent power for classrooms, labs, hostels, and ICT centers, addressing long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s education sector.

The initiative reflects Tinubu’s commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s energy mix, promoting renewable energy, and fostering economic growth through innovation.

By prioritizing climate-smart solutions, the project enhances academic productivity, creates a sustainable campus environment, and aligns with global clean energy goals.

The FUTO solar plant is part of a broader effort by the Federal Ministry of Power to deploy solar hybrid projects across universities, hospitals, and rural areas.

These efforts aim to tackle Nigeria’s energy deficit, create green job opportunities, and drive technological advancement.

The Tinubu administration continues to tie infrastructure development to its vision of empowering youth, boosting competitiveness, and restoring hope.

The FUTO solar plant stands as a testament to this commitment, illuminating both a campus and the path to a sustainable future.
