Nigerian National Sentenced to 10 Years for Drug Trafficking in India

A special court in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, has convicted and sentenced Emmanuel Chukwunonso Samson, a Nigerian national, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh (approximately ₦1,698,330) for drug trafficking.

The case began with the interception of three courier parcels in Chennai on July 17, 2012, containing 1.195 kg of heroin and 200 gm of methaqualone worth over ₹2 crore in the international market.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of James, alias Emmanuel Chukwunonso Samson, in Erode, where authorities seized an additional 4 kg of ganja.

On September 20, 2025, the Special NDPS Court in Coimbatore convicted Samson under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, sentencing him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh.

Although Samson has already served his 10-year sentence, he has been shifted from prison to a special camp.

The Narcotics Control Bureau described the conviction as a "significant achievement" and reaffirmed its commitment to achieving a "Drug-Free India".

The NCB has urged citizens to share information related to narcotics trafficking through the National Narcotics Helpline (1933), ensuring confidentiality for informants.
