Police have apprehended Oliver Ugwu Okechukwu, a 47-year-old Nigerian citizen, for allegedly defrauding a woman from Ilkal town in Bagalkot district of ₹5.5 lakh under the guise of marriage.
The arrest was made by Bagalkot CEN police in Mumbai on Thursday, September 4, 2025, according to Bagalkot SP Siddarth Goel.
Okechukwu, residing in Mumbai’s Shivaji Nagar Bonkode Ganv, Khairane Thane, reportedly targeted women by obtaining their details from matrimonial websites.
He contacted a divorcee from Ilkal, who was seeking to remarry, after finding her profile online. Posing as Satya Amit from London, he promised to marry her.
Approximately 18 months ago, Okechukwu claimed he had arrived in India and that customs officials at the airport had seized US dollars worth ₹1 crore.
He convinced the woman to transfer ₹5.5 lakh to a provided bank account to help retrieve the seized funds.
Trusting him, she sent the money via RTGS. After the transaction, Okechukwu ceased contact, prompting the woman to file a complaint with Bagalkot’s cybercrime police.SP Goel revealed that Okechukwu operated under a false identity.
Police tracked his transactions via PhonePe and Google Pay, locating him within Mumbai’s Uppar Khairana police limits.
CCTV footage from shops where he made purchases aided in his identification. Authorities seized four cellphones, a laptop, and a passport from him.Okechukwu was presented before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
The case was cracked by a team including Additional SP Mahanteshwar Jiddi, DSP Girish Bhojannavar, and SI Rudrayya Hiremath.
