Nigeria Senate Postpones Plenary Resumption to October 7

The Nigerian Senate has postponed the resumption of its plenary sessions from today, Tuesday, September 23, to October 7, 2025, extending the chamber's annual recess by an additional two weeks.

The announcement came via an internal memo circulated late Monday evening, signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The brief document stated: "This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025.

Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted. Distinguished Senators are kindly invited to note the postponement and adjust their schedules accordingly.

"While the memo provided no explicit reason for the delay, sources close to the Senate leadership indicated that the move is intended to allow lawmakers ample time to participate in Nigeria's 65th Independence Day celebrations on October 1.

The national holiday, marking the country's independence from British colonial rule in 1960, often involves widespread festivities, constituency engagements, and official events across the federation.

This extension aligns with a similar postponement announced by the House of Representatives, which also shifted its plenary resumption to the same date.

The House's decision was detailed in a separate memorandum from Clerk Yahaya Danzaria, expressing "deep regrets" over the change and urging members to recalibrate their plans.

"Honourable Members are hereby informed that the resumption of plenary sessions earlier scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2025, has been rescheduled. The new date of resumption is Tuesday, October 7, 2025," the memo read.

This is not the first such adjustment in the National Assembly's calendar this year. Earlier in April, both chambers extended their recess from April 29 to May 6 to accommodate International Workers' Day and enhanced constituency outreach.

In January, the Senate delayed its post-holiday return by a week to complete budget defense sessions.
