The Nepalese army is in discussions with protest leaders to appoint an interim leader following violent demonstrations that led to the ousting of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, an army spokesperson confirmed.
The protests, sparked by a now-reversed social media ban, marked the worst unrest in decades.
On Thursday, soldiers patrolled the quiet yet tense streets of Kathmandu for a second day. President Ramchandra Paudel called for calm and cooperation, stating, “I am working within the constitutional framework to resolve this crisis swiftly and address protesters’ demands.”
Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet told Reuters that talks with protesters are ongoing to normalize the situation. Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride reported an “uneasy calm” in Kathmandu, with crowds occasionally gathering near military headquarters before being dispersed.
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female chief justice in 2016, has emerged as a leading candidate for interim leader.
“She’s honest and fearless,” said protester Sujit Kumar Jha, 34. Sources say Karki, 73, has agreed to the role, though a constitutional path for her appointment is still being explored.
