NDPC releases security advisory on Google Chrome, says it’s vulnerable to hackers

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) released a security advisory statement alerting Nigerians to several vulnerabilities found in Google Chrome.

The advisory was announced on NDPC official X account on Wednesday.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Google Chrome. The most severe of these could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a user’s system,” the statement said.

The commission explained that the successful exploitation of Google Chrome vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to install a programme on users’ systems, view, delete, or alter users’ data, and create new user accounts with full administrative rights.

NDPC advised users to apply necessary updates to Google Chrome and operate with standard user rights instead of administrative rights to limit potential damage.

“Exercise caution when clicking on suspicious links, opening unsolicited attachments, or visiting untrusted websites,” they added.

In July 2024, a fine of $220 million was imposed on Meta by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for alleged multiple data privacy violations.

FCCPC said the fine was reached after a 38-month joint investigation with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) into the privacy practices and consumer data policies of Meta and its subsidiary, WhatsApp.
