The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced plans to make drug integrity tests compulsory for individuals applying for new driver’s licenses across Nigeria, aiming to curb drug-related road accidents.
The proposal was revealed on Tuesday, September 24, 2025, during the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Special Marshals Summit in Abuja.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), represented by Deputy Commandant General of Narcotics, Umoru Ambrose, emphasized the agency’s commitment to addressing the root causes of road crashes linked to drug abuse.
“This initiative will ensure only drug-free individuals are licensed to drive, enhancing road safety,” Ambrose stated, highlighting the partnership with FRSC as a critical step forward.
The NDLEA and FRSC are finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the policy, with NDLEA having completed its portion.
Once signed, the testing framework will be rolled out at licensing centers nationwide. While the proposal primarily targets new license applicants, discussions suggest it could extend to broader road safety measures in the future.
The move aligns with NDLEA’s ongoing campaigns to combat drug abuse, including mandatory testing in schools and other sectors.
The agency’s collaboration with FRSC indicates a shared goal of reducing accidents caused by impaired driving, a growing concern in Nigeria.
Details on implementation, including costs and timelines, are yet to be finalized, pending the MoU’s completion.
