Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has once again ignited controversy, this time in Major League Soccer, after video footage captured him appearing to spit at a Seattle Sounders staff member following Inter Miami's 3-0 defeat in the 2025 Leagues Cup final on Sunday night at Lumen Field in Seattle.
The incident unfolded in the chaotic moments after the final whistle, overshadowing Seattle's historic triumph—their first Leagues Cup title and completing a collection of all major North American trophies. Inter Miami, featuring stars like Lionel Messi and Suarez, struggled throughout the match.
Seattle took the lead in the 26th minute when Osaze De Rosario headed home a cross from Alex Roldan.
The Sounders sealed the victory late on, with Roldan converting a penalty in the 84th minute after a foul on Georgi Minoungou, and Paul Rothrock adding a third in the 89th minute in front of a sellout crowd of 69,314.
Tempers erupted immediately post-match as Suarez, visibly frustrated, sprinted toward celebrating Seattle midfielder Obed Vargas, putting the 20-year-old in a headlock.
This sparked a mass brawl involving players from both sides, with punches thrown, necks grabbed, and scuffles breaking out across the pitch.
Inter Miami's Sergio Busquets was seen delivering a light punch to Vargas' chin, while defender Maximiliano Falcón put Seattle's Cody Baker in a chokehold.
Officials and staff rushed to separate the groups. As the melee subsided, Suarez then confronted a member of the Sounders' coaching staff—described in reports as either an assistant coach or security personnel—getting in their face during a heated exchange.
With teammate and goalkeeper Oscar Ustari attempting to intervene and pull him away, broadcast and social media footage clearly showed the 38-year-old Uruguayan leaning forward and spitting toward the staff member's face, appearing to hit them.
The shocking act has drawn widespread condemnation online and from pundits, with many labeling it "disgusting" and calling for severe punishment.
Seattle head coach Brian Schmetzer lamented the distraction from his team's achievement, stating, "Unfortunately, that is going to take some of the attention away from a great performance by the Seattle Sounders.
I guess we can take that as a compliment that Miami’s frustrations led to some things happening on the field that shouldn’t happen. I’m going to shut that down because that shouldn’t be the story."
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano, a former Barcelona teammate of Suarez, sidestepped questions, saying, "I have nothing to say. I don’t know what happened."
Major League Soccer and CONCACAF is yet to issue an official statement or disciplinary decision as of Monday, September 1, 2025, but Suarez faces the prospect of a lengthy suspension.
Leagues Cup regulations stipulate that any post-elimination ban would carry over to the next edition of the tournament, potentially sidelining him for 2026.
MLS could impose additional penalties, given the league's strict stance on unsportsmanlike conduct.
This outburst adds to Suarez's notorious history of on-field controversies. During his time at Liverpool, he was banned for eight matches in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra and later refused to shake his hand.
He also served a 10-game suspension in 2013 for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic and was handed a four-month global ban after biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup—his third biting incident, following one at Ajax in 2010.
