An Owerri-based lawyer, Chinedu Agu has been remanded at the Owerri Correctional Centre over alleged cyberstalking, criminal defamation and incitement articles criticising Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration.
Agu pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge, but an
Owerri Chief Magistrate, Obinna Njemanze said he had no jurisdiction to try the
matter and ordered Agu remanded pending the advice of the Imo State Director of
Public Prosecutions, DPP.
The matter was adjourned to October 29, 2025.
The magistrate also rejected a bail application led by
former Imo State Attorney-General, Milletus Nlemadim on behalf of Agu.
The charges against the lawyer originated from various
social media posts in which he allegedly criticised the state government and
the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the prosecutors, on August 30, 2025, Agu wrote
on Facebook that “the courts are closed and justice has been kidnapped not by
bandits in the bush, but by bandit in government” and described the state as
“tyranny trapped in sinking bureaucracy.”
