The Lagos State Government has reopened the Ogudu-Ifako Bridge to full vehicular traffic, completing critical repairs on 400 meters of its four expansion joints in a swift 73 days, nearly a month ahead of the projected 100-day timeline.
The bridge, a vital artery linking Ogudu and Ifako-Ijaiye to major routes like the Third Mainland Bridge, was partially closed on June 28 to address deteriorating expansion joints that threatened motorist safety.
The project, executed in eight phases, saw the inbound Alapere stretch completed between June 28 and August 16, with the Oworoshoki axis finalized in September.
Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, and Commissioner for Transportation, Seun Osiyemi, inspected the completed works on Tuesday, certifying the bridge’s readiness.
Daramola attributed the early finish to the dedication of contractors, support from security agencies, and the patience of Lagos residents who navigated diversions during the closure.
“We undertook this repair to ensure safety. Thanks to stakeholder cooperation, we delivered ahead of schedule,” he said.
Osiyemi praised residents for enduring disruptions, noting that the bridge’s full reopening would slash travel times and fuel costs.
“This success belongs to all Lagosians who supported the process. We appreciate your perseverance,” he said, urging the public to protect the taxpayer-funded infrastructure.
He highlighted similar successful repairs at Odo-Iyalaro and Apongbon bridges, with plans now shifting to maintenance works in the Maza-Maza area.Commuters expressed relief at the news.
Adebisi Adesesan, a regular user of the route, said, “The closure caused long delays, but this reopening makes it worth it.” Commercial driver Taofeek Shittu added, “The traffic was terrible, and fuel costs were high. This is a big relief for us.”
The Ogudu-Ifako Bridge, now fully operational, restores seamless access to one of Lagos’s busiest corridors, reinforcing the state’s commitment to safe, sustainable infrastructure.
With ongoing projects across the city, officials called for continued public cooperation to maintain Lagos’s momentum as a thriving megacity.
