Kano Gov Reshuffle Cabinet, Redeploys Attorney General to Transport Ministry

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved a minor reshuffle of his cabinet and senior civil service positions, redeploying the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, to oversee the Ministry of Transport.

The move, announced late Monday, aims to optimize administrative efficiency and align expertise with key sectoral needs amid ongoing state development initiatives.

The directive, detailed in a statement by the governor's spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, affects a handful of portfolios, including Justice, Transport, Environment, and Humanitarian Affairs.

Under the reshuffle, Dederi—previously a steadfast legal advisor in high-profile cases, including the governor's election disputes—steps into the transport role, which has been temporarily managed by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs.

That official will now revert to their primary duties in humanitarian services.

Additionally, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Justice Ministry, Barrister Mustapha Nuruddeen Muhammad, has been reassigned as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment.

Governor Yusuf instructed all affected personnel to complete handovers to their most senior subordinates by Tuesday, September 23, ensuring seamless continuity.

"This adjustment is designed to maximize capacity, align responsibilities, and deliver effective results to the people of Kano State," the statement emphasized, reflecting Yusuf's administration's focus on pragmatic governance two years into its term.

Unlike larger shake-ups in late 2024 that saw sackings and the abolition of the Chief of Staff position, this reshuffle is described as "minor," with no reported dismissals.

Dederi's transition to transport has sparked discussions on its potential impact on Kano's infrastructure push.

As AG, he played a pivotal role in defending the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP)-led government's policies against legal challenges from opposition figures.

Now at Transport, he could steer initiatives like urban mobility enhancements and road network expansions, crucial for Kano's bustling commercial hub status.
