An additional 80 megawatts (MW) of electricity has been integrated into Nigeria’s National Grid following the successful commissioning of Unit 1G9 at the Kainji Hydropower Plant by PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited.
The milestone, announced on September 24, 2025, increases the plant’s operational capacity from 520 MW to 600 MW, marking significant progress toward achieving its total installed capacity of 760 MW.
The rehabilitation of Unit 1G9 is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the facility and enhance Nigeria’s power supply.
According to PowerChina, the project aligns with national goals to improve electricity access and reliability.
The upgraded output is expected to provide a vital boost to households and industries, addressing chronic power shortages in the country.
This development shows the importance of international partnerships in advancing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, with further upgrades planned to maximize the Kainji plant’s potential.
