The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for 1,100 non-permanent graduate teachers under the J-Teach program, raising it from ₦30,000 to ₦40,000.
The decision, announced following a council meeting on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, chaired by Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi, aims to boost teacher motivation and enhance the quality of education across the state.
The increment, effective immediately, responds to a formal request from the Ministry for Higher Education, emphasizing the need to support teachers in the J-Teach initiative, which focuses on improving educational outcomes and youth empowerment.
Governor Namadi reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to education, stating, “This increment is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance teacher motivation, boost productivity, and strengthen the quality of education across the state.”
This move comes amid broader efforts by the Jigawa State Government to reform the education sector, including investments in infrastructure and teacher training.
The allowance increase is expected to alleviate economic pressures faced by non-permanent teachers, particularly in light of Nigeria’s challenging economic climate.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Jigawa State branch, has previously called for additional support, including allowances for teachers in hard-to-reach areas, indicating ongoing advocacy for improved teacher welfare.
The decision has been met with positive reactions from educators, with many expressing hope that it will encourage better performance and retention in the teaching profession.
The state government’s focus on education aligns with its vision to drive socioeconomic development through improved learning outcomes, particularly in rural areas.
