Gov Sule Approves N1bn for Essential Medical Equipment to Boost Primary Healthcare

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved N1 billion for the procurement of essential medical equipment aimed at enhancing primary healthcare delivery across the state.

The announcement was made by Dr. Usman Iskilu-Saleh, Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NAPHDA), during an interaction with journalists in Lafia on Tuesday.

This funding injection comes at a critical time, as the state continues to grapple with high rates of child and infant mortality, standing at 60 and 64 per 1,000 live births, respectively, amid reports of recent deaths in 12 communities across 23 local government areas.

Iskilu-Saleh highlighted that the initiative builds on ongoing revitalization efforts, including the upgrade of 58 primary healthcare facilities in collaboration with the World Bank, federal, and state governments.

"Most of these facilities are already complete, with the rest slated for handover within two months," he said, adding that Governor Sule has also greenlit state-funded renovations for nine additional centers.

The new equipment procurement is expected to equip these centers with diagnostic tools, emergency response kits, and maternal-child health supplies, directly addressing gaps in service delivery.

Governor Sule's administration has positioned healthcare as a cornerstone of its agenda since 2019, investing in infrastructure upgrades, drug supplies, personnel training, and health insurance expansion.

Earlier this year, the state allocated N500 million as counterpart funding for the Nasarawa State Health Insurance Agency (NASHIA), enrolling vulnerable groups and judiciary staff.

In August, Sule approved another N1 billion for pensioner gratuities and N1.6 billion for civil servant arrears, alongside covering NECO fees for secondary students—moves underscoring a holistic approach to welfare.

The executive secretary praised the governor's unwavering support, noting that these interventions have already increased patronage at primary facilities and elevated Nasarawa as a national model for healthcare innovation.

"Governor Sule's commitment has transformed our health landscape, from immunization drives lauded by the WHO to resource mobilization for 250,000 vulnerable citizens under the health insurance scheme," Iskilu-Saleh stated.
