Ghana has transferred at least six of the 11 West Africans
from the United States earlier this month, their lawyers have said.
Last week, the migrants filed a complaint alleging unlawful
detention.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, lead counsel for the migrants, told
the BBC in a report on Wednesday that some of the migrants were deported
despite an ongoing legal challenge.
“We can confirm that six were sent to Togo, the others have
been sent to countries which I can’t disclose at this point,” Barker-Vormawor
said.
He noted that only three of those sent to Togo are Togolese.
The nationalities of the others have not been disclosed. However, four
Nigerians were among the first batch of deportees.
The deportees’ lawyers have subsequently withdrawn their
case against the Ghana government, as it has been overtaken by events.
However, they are still pursuing a separate case arguing
that their rights have been violated.
The lawyers said the deportations had made it impossible for
the authorities to bring them before the court or justify their detention.
Neither Togo nor Ghana has commented on the matter.
