Going into the award show, Lady Gaga led the pack with a total of 12 nominations including video, artist and song of the year. Kendrick Lamar closely followed with 10 nominations, Sabrina Carpenter with 9 and Blackpink's Rose with 8.
This year's show had performances from artists like Alex Warren, Doja Cat, Busta Rhymes, Mariah Carey, Conan Grey and Tate McRae. It was hosted by LL Cool J, a two-time VMA winner himself.
Ariana Grande won Video of the Year with the video for her song "brighter days ahead". Overall, Grande went home with a total of 3 awards. Sabrina Carpenter also took home 3 'Moon Person' trophies, including album of the year with "Short n' Sweet". Tyla took home the best afrobeats award with "Push 2 start" beating Rema, Tems, Wizkid and Burna Boy.
