Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Monday evening, where he commended the president's "timely intervention" for restoring peace and stability to the oil-rich state following months of political turmoil.
The meeting, Fubara's first official visit to the presidential villa since the lifting of a six-month state of emergency on September 18, shows the administration's commitment to sustaining the fragile truce brokered earlier this year.
Fubara emerged from the closed-door session to declare that "peace is fully back in Rivers State," emphasizing the success of reconciliation efforts involving himself, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
"I thank and deeply appreciate our father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his timely intervention and unwavering dedication to ensuring peace and stability in our state," Fubara stated, adding that he would not take the president's kindness for granted.
He also reaffirmed his "utmost loyalty and eternal gratitude" to Tinubu, vowing to adhere to the precepts of the peace agreement reached during the emergency period.
The political crisis in Rivers, which escalated in early 2025, stemmed from a power struggle between Fubara and Wike, his predecessor and political godfather, leading to legislative gridlock, defections, and threats of anarchy.
President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18, 2025, appointing a sole administrator to oversee governance and facilitate dialogue among stakeholders.
The intervention, which included multiple reconciliatory meetings, was credited with averting deeper instability, though it drew criticism from opposition figures who labeled it an overreach.
