Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, announced that food prices across Nigeria have significantly dropped due to President Bola Tinubu’s strategic interventions in food security.
Speaking on Arise TV on September 12, 2025, Kyari emphasized that these measures, initiated in July 2023, addressed a critical food security crisis inherited by the administration.
Kyari described Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security as a pivotal move to tackle structural challenges in the sector.
“When President Tinubu took office, there was a significant gap in food availability and supply-demand balance,” he explained.
“For instance, we have a 15% shortfall in rice production, which necessitated a temporary importation window to stabilize prices.”
The minister clarified that the six-month importation period, now concluded, was carefully designed to avoid discouraging local farmers.
Alongside imports, the government implemented robust support measures, including the distribution of 2 million bags of fertilizer at no cost, facilitated by the Central Bank, and subsidized fertilizer programs for farmers.
“These interventions, combined with increased production in 2024, have transformed the food market,” Kyari stated. “I can confidently say that food prices have crashed, reflecting the success of these efforts.”
