The Federal Government has provided relief and empowerment packages to women and vulnerable families in Benue State to mitigate the effects of insecurity and economic hardship.
On Saturday, Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, presented the items in Makurdi on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, according to a statement by her media aide, Jonathan Eze, on Sunday.
The initiative follows recent violence in Benue, with reports of killings and displacement in Logo, Ukum, and Guma Local Government Areas, forcing many into makeshift camps.
The Minister was warmly received at the Air Force Airstrip by women and girls in vibrant traditional attire, waving Nigerian flags, before meeting Governor Hyacinth Alia, Deputy Governor Sir Sam Ode, and other state officials at the Government House.
Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that the relief aligns with President Tinubu’s directive to economically empower women for national development.
“We are putting money directly into the hands of women so they can contribute meaningfully,” she said.
The package included 400 bags of rice, 20 bales of Ankara fabrics, used clothes, pepper-grinding machines, and tailoring machines.
Additionally, 20 women farmers received ₦1 million each, with ₦500,000 already disbursed and the remainder scheduled for later this year.
Cash support was also extended to women’s groups and survivors of gender-based violence.Governor Alia commended the initiative, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to empowering women and supporting displaced persons.
In a gesture of appreciation, Tiv leaders honored the Minister with traditional attire and the title “Dooshima of Benue,” meaning “the love of Benue people.”
The visit concluded with gratitude from residents and officials, who described the intervention as timely amid ongoing security and economic challenges.
