Electricity Workers Suspend Strike After FG's Intervention

Electricity workers under the Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) suspended their industrial action on Thursday following negotiations facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Power.

The strike, initiated by NUEE over unresolved disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) management, stemmed from issues including non-implementation of the national minimum wage, worker casualization, lack of tools and protective equipment since 2021, unpaid salaries since April, and outstanding retirement benefits.

The resolution came after an emergency meeting in Abuja with TCN, the National Independent System Operator (NISO), the Ministry of Labour, and union representatives.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, stipulating that unions would review a committee report on October 6-7, 2025, for potential implementation within the month.

TCN and NISO were tasked with assessing financial implications and drafting an implementation plan for further discussions with the Minister of Power and the unions.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was directed to expedite tariff reviews to support the process, with assurances that no worker would face victimization for participating in the strike.

In a related development, Sahara Group’s Afam 2 Power Plant in Rivers State, commissioned by President Bola Tinubu on June 5, 2025, has increased its output to 180 megawatts (MW), strengthening Nigeria’s national grid.

Dr. Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, hailed the milestone as a testament to the company’s expertise and commitment to reliable energy.

“Achieving this with zero downtime reflects the technical excellence of our team,” he said, crediting improved gas supply and infrastructure upgrades.

Adesina emphasized Afam 2’s role in Sahara Group’s strategy to deliver cleaner, reliable energy, aligning with the Federal Government’s energy transition goals.

Sahara Power Group, a subsidiary of Sahara Group, operates key affiliates like Egbin Power Plc, Ikeja Electric Plc, and First Independent Power Limited, reinforcing its position as a leading private power business in Africa.

Adesina expressed gratitude to regulators, stakeholders, and host communities for their support in advancing inclusive energy access across Nigeria.
