Ekiti Govt Approves Renovation of 250 School Infrastructures

The Ekiti State Government has awarded contracts for the renovation of over 250 school infrastructure projects across the state, including thousands of furniture upgrades, under the 2024 Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC)/State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) intervention program, according to SUBEB Chairman Femi Akinwumi.

The announcement, made in a statement on Saturday, September 27, 2025, in Ado Ekiti, signals the imminent start of construction work to enhance educational facilities.

The statement comes in response to a viral video showing a flooded classroom block at St. Westley Primary School in Omuo Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area, caused by a rainstorm that blew off the roof.

Akinwumi debunked claims of government inaction, clarifying that the affected building was evacuated last academic session, with pupils and teachers relocated to new classrooms within the school.

The damaged structure has been earmarked for renovation under the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB program and proposed for additional funding in 2025 under UBEC’s Direct Intervention Funding.

Akinwumi revealed that SUBEB is investigating why pupils were in the abandoned building featured in the video, promising sanctions for those found responsible.

He emphasized the state’s proactive measures, including the use of high-gauge aluminum roofing sheets in SUBEB projects over the past four years, which has significantly reduced storm-related damage to school buildings.

The renovation projects, which include new buildings, toilets, furniture, and perimeter fences, aim to bolster infrastructure in public primary schools like St. Westley.

Akinwumi urged the public to dismiss misleading narratives, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving educational environments and safeguarding schools against natural disasters like rainstorms.
