The Department of State Services (DSS) will arraign activist Omoyele Sowore, alongside X Corp and Meta Platforms Inc., before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, for allegedly posting false and defamatory content against President Bola Tinubu.
The charges stem from Sowore’s social media posts on August 25 and 26, 2025, where he labeled Tinubu a “criminal” in response to the president’s claim during a Brazil visit that his administration had eradicated corruption in Nigeria.
According to the five-count charge, Sowore’s posts on his X handle and Facebook account (Omoyele Sowore) were “knowingly false” and intended to incite public unrest and tarnish Tinubu’s reputation, violating the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and sections of the Criminal Code Act.
The DSS also named X and Meta as co-defendants for failing to remove the posts despite a September 8 ultimatum, accusing them of complicity in spreading malicious content.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate and SaharaReporters publisher, has countered with a lawsuit against the DSS, X, and Meta, seeking to protect his posts from forced deletion and arguing that the agency’s actions infringe on free speech.
He has vowed to appear in court, dismissing the charges as “invented offences.” The case has ignited online debates, with some defending Sowore’s right to free expression and others supporting the DSS’s push for accountability.
