Dangote Refinery to Proceed with Free Fuel Distribution Despite Industry Pushback

Dangote Refinery has reaffirmed its commitment to distributing free fuel as planned, dismissing recent criticisms from certain oil and gas industry groups as a deliberate attempt to derail the initiative.

In a statement released last night, the refinery accused groups like the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) of orchestrating a campaign of “economic sabotage” driven by vested interests threatened by the refinery’s progress.

“Their actions and threats are not rooted in legitimate concerns about unionization but are a calculated effort to undermine our efforts,” the statement read.

The refinery highlighted a 2022 incident where an NNPC report revealed that a DAPPMAN member supplied petrol with over 15% methanol content—far exceeding acceptable limits—causing widespread engine damage.

No government inquiry or independent investigation followed, raising questions about accountability in the sector.

Dangote Refinery, which imports over 60% of its crude oil, has positioned Nigeria as a key supplier of affordable petrol in West Africa, offering prices below the international benchmark.

The statement also exposed practices like “round-tripping,” where petrol produced by Dangote is re-imported from Togo at a markup, undermining claims by DAPPMAN and affiliates of being Nigeria’s primary petrol suppliers.

The refinery remains steadfast in its mission to provide affordable fuel and counter industry resistance.
