Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an interim order barring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim national chairman and national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The order, granted in response to a motion ex parte filed by Nafiu Gombe, also prevents INEC from acknowledging Mark and Aregbesola’s representatives until a pending motion on notice is heard.
The lawsuit names the ADC, Mark, Aregbesola, INEC, and former ADC national chairman Ralph Nwosu as defendants.
Despite INEC previously listing Mark and Aregbesola on its website, the court’s ruling temporarily suspends their leadership roles.
Other ADC officers recently recognized by INEC, including former Edo Governor Oserheimen Osunbor (national legal adviser), Ibrahim Mani (national treasurer), and Akibu Dalhatu (national financial secretary), are also affected by the ongoing legal proceedings.
The ADC, adopted by an opposition coalition on July 2, 2025, as its platform for the 2027 elections, includes prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
At the coalition’s unveiling, Nwosu handed over the party’s membership cards to Mark and Aregbesola, formalizing their roles before the court’s intervention.
