Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on Monday to express solidarity following a violent attack on Malami’s convoy in Kebbi State, which Malami described as politically motivated.
The attack occurred shortly after Malami, who served as Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2023, returned to Kebbi and visited families to offer condolences for recent losses.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assault took place near the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Birnin Kebbi, with approximately 10 vehicles in Malami’s convoy damaged and several supporters injured.
Photos from the scene revealed shattered windows and broken windshields on multiple vehicles.Malami alleged that thugs armed with weapons and stones emerged from the All Progressives Congress (APC) state headquarters to carry out the attack.
“I was in Birnin Kebbi solely to pay condolences, not for political campaigns. This painful and unfortunate incident shows the dangers we face,” he said.
During his visit, Atiku condemned the attack and highlighted a disturbing trend of political violence targeting ADC leaders across Nigeria.
“This dangerous pattern threatens our democracy. Security agencies and political leaders must act urgently to curb it,” Atiku stated, according to Muhammad Al-Amin, Zonal Coordinator of the Malami Support Organisation.
He reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy against anti-democratic forces.Malami expressed appreciation for Atiku’s support, describing the incident as a warning against the politicization of violence and attempts to undermine democratic institutions for partisan gain.
“This attack shows the risks political leaders face in today’s charged climate,” he said.
Nigeria has a history of election-related violence, with numerous attacks on convoys, campaign offices, and rallies reported in the lead-up to the 2023 elections.
