Armed bandits stormed Makuwana village in Sabon Birnin Local Council of Sokoto State, abducting 49 residents in a violent raid on Sunday, September 7, 2025, that also saw two villagers drown while attempting to escape the assault.
The attack, part of a string of banditry incidents plaguing the community, has left residents reeling from both human losses and the devastation of recent flooding, compounding their hardship.
Village head Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim disclosed the harrowing details during a condolence visit by Sokoto State Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir on Monday, September 8.
According to Ibrahim, Makuwana has endured three bandit attacks within the past week, with the latest forcing terrified residents to flee toward a nearby river.
Tragically, two individuals drowned in the desperate attempt to escape. The bandits, armed and relentless, kidnapped at least 49 people, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
Ibrahim also highlighted the toll of recent floods that submerged parts of the village, destroying homes and property.
“As Muslims, we accept these tragedies in good faith, but we are in dire need of help,” he said, appealing to the state government for urgent assistance to address both the security crisis and the flood’s aftermath.
Deputy Governor Gobir, speaking to the grieving community, expressed deep sympathy and pledged government action.
He promised to explore the construction of an alternative road to Sabon Birnin, where floodwaters have washed away a critical route, severely hampering access.
Gobir reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their fight against banditry and urged residents to remain vigilant and prayerful for peace.
“We stand with you in this difficult time,” he said, offering prayers for those who lost their lives.
The attack underscores the persistent threat of banditry in Sokoto and Nigeria’s northwest, where armed groups frequently target rural communities, abducting residents for ransom and disrupting livelihoods.
The added burden of flooding has further strained Makuwana’s residents, many of whom now face the dual challenge of rebuilding while fearing further attacks.
