Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has accused those urging former President Goodluck Jonathan to run in the 2027 presidential election of orchestrating a deliberate plot to destabilize Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on September 18, 2025, Wike labeled the calls hypocritical, pointing out that many of the same voices abandoned Jonathan during his 2015 re-election bid.
“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for crisis. These are the same people who abandoned him in 2015. Why now? Jonathan has made a name for himself globally, and they just want to drag him into unnecessary conflict,” Wike stated.
He cautioned against moves to disrupt Nigeria’s political balance by promoting Jonathan or other southern candidates under the pretense of a “one-term presidency,” describing such efforts as insincere and destabilizing.
Wike also addressed the economic challenges under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, acknowledging the hardships but defending the president’s tough decisions as necessary for long-term growth.
“Yes, there is hardship. I agree. But no one can deny that this government is making efforts to improve things. I see the projects in Abuja daily; they are evidence that something is happening,” he said, citing visible infrastructure developments in the FCT.
The minister dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent warnings of a potential revolution due to hunger and poverty, accusing him of hypocrisy.
“Atiku was vice president for eight years. Why didn’t he lay the foundation to prevent hunger then? Now he keeps talking about hunger and revolution. For me, I don’t even bother reading what he says, because there is no truth in it,” Wike asserted.
Urging patience with Tinubu’s reforms, Wike called on opposition leaders to refrain from exploiting economic challenges for political gain.
